Cap Classique Route

Stories about champagne always pay homage to the father of champagne, Dom Perignon – the blind monk. When he tasted his first successful bottle of champagne, he apparently shouted, “Brothers come quickly, I am tasting the stars!”

Here in Franschhoek we have a new star and we urge you to come quickly and see for yourself.  A Cap Classique route has been mapped to guide you to 18 cellars where MCC is made.  MCC is the South African term referring to the classic French method of making sparkling wine.

We suggest you ask the Tourist office to book an appointment for a tasting with one of the two wine makers at their cellars.  You can of course simply follow the map and taste MCC where you please.

The conversations that develop over a glass of bubbly are worth remembering for other occasions when one might be called upon for subject matter. Perhaps you would like to ponder the issues we came across:  If we can’t call our bubbly ‘champagne’, what about ‘sjampanje’?
